why does the usa need to be so harsh in their sentencing

Killing someone, molesting or hurting a child, vicious crimes deserve harsh punishment. But do you think keeping people in prison over crimes that did not kill or harm a person(s) is a right thing to do. The family is the one who suffers. They are the one that has to spend $they dont have for this incarcerated person to live. Phone calls, food, and necessaties who do you think are paying for this, the taxpayer who is also paying for the prison itself. Sounds like a problem for the elderly, the poor, and the struggling young families.
